In Britain he has always been Father Christmas — the same red-coated gift-bringer that Americans call Santa Claus. Every Christmas Eve he sets off from the North Pole at around 6:00 UTC and flies west with the bedtime line: New Zealand and Australia first, then Asia, Africa and Europe, ending in Alaska and Hawaii about 26 hours later. The United Kingdom is one of his later stops — he usually crosses British skies between 9 pm and midnight, once children from Land's End to John o' Groats are tucked up in bed.
