How to write a letter to Santa

There is no official formula, but the letters that work almost always have four parts: who you are, what you did well this year, what you are wishing for, and a thank-you for the trip. The order matters โ€” starting with the wish makes the letter read like a shopping list, and Santa reads plenty of those.

The hardest โ€” and best โ€” part is the one about what went well this year. It doesn't need to be extraordinary: helping at home, sticking with something difficult, being kind to a little brother. Writing it down makes the child look back at their year, and that is exactly the point of the ritual.

Keep the wish list short. One heartfelt wish beats a catalogue page: it gives the letter a centre, it is easier for Santa (and the family) to act on, and it teaches the difference between wishing and ordering.

Where to send it โ€” and will Santa write back?

The classic addresses really work. In the US, letters go to Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole 88888 โ€” that's the USPS Operation Santa address. Canada Post delivers letters addressed to Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0 and replies for free in any language. In the UK, Royal Mail answers letters sent to Santa's Grotto, Reindeerland XM4 5HQ by early December.

Every programme has a deadline in early-to-mid December, and they all need a readable return address on the envelope โ€” that is the single most common reason a reply never arrives. Have the child write the letter, but let a grown-up double-check the envelope.

If posting a physical letter isn't your thing, the letter still does its job: print it, let the child sign it, and leave it by the tree on Christmas Eve next to the cookies. It disappears overnight, and that is all the proof anyone needs.

When to write it

The sweet spot is the last week of November through the first week of December. Early enough that a postal reply makes it back before Christmas, late enough that the wish list has settled โ€” November wishes have a way of changing by December.

Writing the letter also makes a lovely first-Advent tradition: decorations up, cocoa on, letter written. Kids remember the ritual far longer than they remember what they asked for.

Missed the post? Nothing is lost. A letter left by the tree on the 24th still reaches its reader, and for a faster answer Santa can reply in person โ€” see below.

Writing to Santa is the free part, and it's the part that builds the excitement. But when a message arrives where Santa says your child's name, mentions exactly what they did well this year and speaks their language โ€” that face is something else. Letter to Santa โ€” FAQ

What do you write in a letter to Santa?

Four things: who you are (name and age), one good thing you did this year, what you are wishing for, and a thank-you. Keep the wish list short โ€” one or two heartfelt wishes work better than a catalogue.

What is Santa's address?

In the US: Santa Claus, 123 Elf Road, North Pole 88888. From Canada: Santa Claus, North Pole, H0H 0H0. In the UK: Santa's Grotto, Reindeerland XM4 5HQ. All three are real programmes run by the national postal services.

Does Santa write back?

Yes, if you use one of the postal programmes and include a return address. Canada Post replies free in any language, Royal Mail replies to letters sent by early December, and USPS runs Operation Santa. France and Germany have free reply programmes too.

When should we send the letter?

Late November to early December is ideal โ€” every reply programme has a deadline around the first or second week of December, and mail gets slow near Christmas.

Can I print the letter?

Yes. Under the finished letter there is a print button, so the child can sign it by hand, decorate it, and post it โ€” or leave it by the tree on Christmas Eve.

My child can't write yet โ€” can we still do this?

Absolutely. Fill in the template together, read it out loud, and let the child sign with a drawing or a scribble. Santa is famously good at reading those.
